Singapore-based
Indonesian photographer Hendra Lauw opens his first one-man exhibition
titled, "Human and Nature," on Tuesday, June 17, 2008
at the OWG Art Gallery. Lauw showcases portraits and panoramic shots
taken over the past two years in India, Indonesia, Thailand and
the Philippines.
Lauw shares that he experiences "a high personal satisfaction
of being able to capture any element of life through my camera lenses,
be it the beautiful natural landscape and portraits of local people
in places I visited." Some of these places include the photographers'
paradises of Bangalore, Ayuthaya and Central Java, as well as Boracay,
Batanes and Pinatubo. "I like to share and convey the story
behind the photos that I took." Photographs in "Human
and Nature" indeed reveal a gift for visual story-telling,
with portraits of monks, farmers and the elderly. Lauw's lush landscapes
likewise have a tale to tell, with enigmatic centuries-old temples,
bangka's by the beach in the sunrise and a clifftop silhouette against
a purple dusk.
An artist-photographer for the past seven years, Lauw's body of
work is comprised mainly of landscapes and portraits, particularly
of children. " I simply like to capture life through my camera
lenses," he says. Since making the switch to digital photography
in 2003, Lauw's pictures enjoy great popularity online. He won Best
South East Asia Photoblog, and was a Runner-up for Best Portrait
Photography at the 2007 Photobloggies Awards in Chicago. He was
also a finalist for the 2006 and 2007 Best Asian Photoblog on coolphotoblogs.com,
and made it into the Hall of Fame on photoblog.org.
His work has likewise repeatedly received "Noteworthy"
votes on the Photo Friday website, for categories including Poverty,
Adolescence, Success, Panorama, and Girl. Lauw's website has also
