Afterglow
Rafa Rod

Ophthalmologist Dr. Rafael Rodriguez mounts his second solo exhibition titled “Afterglow,” opening on Wednesday, July 23, 2009 at the One Workshop Gallery in Makati. An established photographer who is a member of the Photographers Club of the Philippines (PCP) and the Canon Users (CU!) Group, Dr. Rodriguez, or Rafa Rod, now ventures into the realm of mixed media with his latest series of prints.

“These are images frozen, captured from time. Imagine time as a flow of water. Every drop is a representation of an image, taken from the whole but cannot be torn apart,” says Rafa Rod of his work. Working from the concept of the afterglow, defined medically as an image retained on the retina resulting from prolonged focus on a particular image, Rafa Rod says “Every photograph is an afterglow of that image, a glimpse into the fragment of time.”
     
 

The latest in a long line of career photographers, Rafa Rod started taking pictures at age six using his grandmother’s Kodak brownie camera. His training as a doctor contributed to his artistic development as it allowed him to delve into medical photography. Now both a film and digital photographer, Rafa Rod has been exhibiting his photographs since 1996. A recognized master of the use of monochrome, his recent creative explorations involve lomography and mixed media.
 
“Afterglow” features twenty photographic prints on archival paper representing a record of Rafa Rod’s memories, visions, stories and ideas, which he says “cannot be translated any other way except through (my) photographic art.” His subject matter includes human figures and European vistas with a vintage feel and a touch of surrealism.
 
“Afterglow” by Dr. Rafael Rodriguez runs until August 6, 2009 at the OWG Creative Centre Gallery, Ground Floor 2241 La Fuerza Plaza II, Don Chino Roces Ave. corner Sabio St., Makati City.
