Rosscapili Reloads Coexistence

Master painter, photographer and printmaker Rosscapili returns with more mixed media masterpieces with “Coexistence.” Opening at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at the 856 G GALLERY in Cebu City, “Coexistence II” features Rosscapili’s latest collection of powerful digital archival mixed media on canvas.

“Coexistence II” follows on the heels of Rosscapili’s eponymous collection which debuted last July at the SM Megamall. The collection comprised his comeback exhibition following a four-year hiatus from the painting and exhibition circuit. For “Coexistence II” Rosscapili combines painting with archival photographic works created over years of travel. Interesting people he has captured during his sojourns in various settings and lighting are highlighted with bold strokes and
rich impasto textures in acrylic—reminiscent of his trademark gesturalpaintings, with their dynamic, vigorous, cross-canvas slashes that create layers upon layers of colour embodying his multi-dimensional imagination.

Drawn from his extensive experience and expertise in the fields of painting, film and digital photography, digital art and archival printmaking, “Coexistence II” likewise showcases Rosscapili’s maturity as a multimedia artist. Among the first Filipino artists to create a series of montages melding photography and digital archival printmaking on canvas, Rosscapili explains that his work for his “Coexistence” series veers away from the convention of painting on prints. His work in this vein has been well received by artists and collectors who find themselves enthralled by his fresh vision and technique.

30 Years in the Making…

Though Rosscapili has spent no less than 3 decades focusing his creative energies on painting, his love affair with photography began during his student days in the 70’s. After studying Drafting Technology, Art Education and Ceramic Technology at PCAT in 1976, he bought his first Pentax k2, which he used for 25 years, by winning his first on-the-spot painting competition in 1977. Following his graduation in 1981 from PWU as a Fine Arts Advertising major, he went on to study Colour Separation Technique in Melbourne, Australia. Since then he has successfully mounted over 30 one-man exhibitions in Manila and in Paris, France. His participation in more than 35 group exhibitions includes his representing the Philippines in ASEAN Art Exhibitions in Fukuoka, Japan and Taipei, Taiwan. He has also accumulated at least 55 awards and distinctions, the latest of which was The Pamana ng Lahi Award, given to Filipino Global Artists in San Francisco, California.

Apart from his work as a visual artist, Rosscapili is also an art writer and art educator who runs his own art company and studio. He is also a member of the Visual Arts Committee and the Executive Council of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), where he champions the cause of the Filipino artist photographer. Rosscapili’s works are owned by various distinguished art collectors, including Senator Ralph Recto, Korina Sanchez, Jean Henri Lhuillier, the Sultan of Qatar, Ambassador Soedarmono of Indonesia, Ambassador Maurice Baker of Singapore, Iya Villania, Oscar Lopez and Kuh Ledesma. His work also graces such corporate collections as CitiBank, Hongkong Airport, Chanel Dubai, Shangri-La Hotel Makati, Philippine Airlines, National Panasonic, United Airlines and the Philippine Stock Exchange.
